Markandeya

Born in the clan of Bhrigu Rishi, Markandeya had been a dedicated celebate and stringent ascetic. Even when he was young in age, the prophets had declared that he shall be short lived. It was because of this, that he, with the permission of Rishis and Munis undertook to do servere penance. As a result of the same he became victorious over death and saw directly, at the end of the era ( Kalpanta ), universal destruction ( Pralaya ). In Ramayana and Purana(s), he has at many places been mentioned as one with a very long age ( Dirghayu ). Markandeya Rishi taught Dharma to the Pandavas; specially, Yudhishthira was highly impressed by his sermons on Dharma and philosophy.
