Congress and advent of Gandhiji After the death of Lokamanya
Tilak, Gandhiji became the sole leader of Congress. The Congress leaders intended to ask for dominion status by the end of 1929. But the attitude of the British government was different. Lord Irwin said that India would be granted self-rule within the British Empire. But Congress wanted
swarajya, or complete self-rule. When the Congress met on the banks of the River
Ravi, near Lahore in 1929, they declared complete independence as their goal. 26th January, 1930 was declared Independence Day and a pledge was taken by the people of India on that date, which was repeated every year thereafter.
