Hill
Rail Journeys in India
There are five railway
trains that ply in the hilly regions of India. Amongst these the
best known are the 83 kilometre long, 610 mm gauge 'toy' railway
spanning the terrain between Siliguri and Darjeeling in the
North-East and the 96 kilometre track of 762 mm guage that takes you
to Shimla. The third hilly track is the one connecting the 162
kilometre stretch between Pathankot and the Kangra valley in
Himachal Pradesh. Then there is a 46 kilometre link between
Mettupalayam and Udhagamandalam in the South and a 20 kilometre
stretch of 610 mm guage between Neral and Matheran in Maharashtra.
These tiny, quaint
little trains take you up to the mountains, beyond the clouds, past
little hamlets and terraced fields, through flower filled meadows
and dense forests, making their way through tunnels and over bridges
at a leisurely pace.
