Spread over 20 acres and
dedicated to Lord Shiva is the Ekambareswarer
Temple, built
by King Krishna Devaraja of the Vijayanagar dynasty. It derives its
name from the God of the Mango tree - Eka Amra Nahar. Rooted in the
temple is a 3,500-year-old mango tree, its four branches symbolizing
the four sacred Vedas. It is said that the mangoes oil tile four
branches have distinctly different tastes. The 1000 Pillared Hall
here with its elaborately detailed pillars and the 185 m. high
gopuram, one of the highest in South India, makes this temple truly
an impressive work of art.
