Besides temples,
Kancheepuram is renowned for its hand woven silks and
cottons. The
history of this fine fabric goes back to the Pallava dynasty where
the kings employed weavers to produce this fabulous material. This
art of weaving has been handed down from generation to generation.
The sarees with
contrasting borders draw inspiration from the temples. They are
renowned for their pretty temple borders woven in gold thread. The
exquisite traditional motifs of mangoes, floral designs, peacocks
and other birds are used on the rich zari
(gold thread) pallavs.
