State Museum
The State Museum, established in 1917, has an excellent collection of stone and terracotta sculptures especially from the Mauryan Period. The most outstanding piece is of course the Didarganj Yakshi. A larger than life voluptuous, female figure carved from the yellowish sandstone from Chunar, Bihar, the glossy sheen of the surface is a characteristic feature of the Mauryan school.
On view are toys, icons and mother goddess figures. The bronzes on view include early Buddhist figures, a standing Buddha and bodhisattvas.
