Freedom Struggle For Dandi March
The history of the freedom struggle comes alive through stamps issued by the Government of India. In 1947, to commemmorate the Independence of India, two stamps were issued, one on the National Flag and one depicting the Ashoka Lion Capital. In 1950 on 26th January a beautiful stamp showing 'Rejoicing Crowds in the Republic of India' was issued. Through out since, stamps have been issued depicting various facets of the freedom struggle and its victorious aftermath. The freedom struggles victorious moments, anxious and sad days, its martys and hero's are displayed on over 80 stamps issued over the years.
The Government of india issued a stamp potraying the Rani of thansi to mark the first Indian War of Independence. The quit india Movement, the non-co-operation movement, Salt Sathyagraha, 'Swaraj is my Birth right' slogan of bala Gangadara Thilak the Dhandi march, and many more historic movements are immortalised for ever in beautiful and memorable stamps. The Dhandi March of Mahatma Gandhi has been depicted twice. Once in a set of four stamps issued on 2nd october 1969 to mark his birth centenary and again on 2nd october 1980 in a se-tenant pair. Freedom fighters have been honoured by portraying them in stamps issued in five series culminating in the issue on the 40th year of independence on 15. 8. 1987. The repression of the Indian freedom struggle by the British has been artistically portayed in a stamp designed and painted by the eminent painter M. F. Hussain in the year 1988.
Mahatma Gandhi aroundwhom the freedom struggle revolves is the unique personality on whom not only India but over 70 countries have issued stamps. On his birth centenary in 1969, 15 nations issued stamps. On independence day in 1948, the first stamp portraying Mahatma Gandhi was issued. It was a set of four stamps printed in Switzerland. The complete set of these four stamps is now valued at over Rs. 60,000/- Gandhiji had a charming personality which the Government ofIndia well knows. There are stamps showing him rubbing noses with a child, showing him with a chakra, showing him with kasturbhai and with nehru, all these stamps never loose their charm and are still in demand,To commemmorate his connection with South Africa, two stamps were issued on 2. 10. 95. Simultaneously, the Republic of South Africa also issued stamps on Mahatma Gandhi. In 1964, stamps on nethaji Subash Chandra Bose were issued. The Azad-Hind founded by Nethaji Subash Chandra Bose also issued 6 stamps, which were in circulation in territories won by the Indian National Army. These are very rare today and are in great demand.
The romance and the history of the freedom struggle evokes sentiment and passion among all Indians even today. A collection of stamps on the freedom struggle brings these emotions to the fore. It is a collection well worth working for.
