Introduction

One of the larger states in India, Uttar Pradesh spreads out from the north Indian plains to the Himalayan ranges of Nepal as well as to the eastern state of Bihar and parts of central India.

Being a vast state area wise there is great diversity in its local crafts. Uttar Pradesh also has some of India's major industries alongside -cottage industry producing handicraft items.

The world heritage sites of Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri as well as the religiously important sites of Mathura and Vrindavan - associated with Lord Krishna are situated in U. P.

U.P has the distinction of having some of the major centres for learning such as the Benaras Hindu University at Varanasi and the Aligarh Muslim University at Aligarh, both world renowned. Agra

Agra is home to the Taj Mahal, a world famous destination, visited by almost all tourists, domestic and international.

How to reach: Agra is connected by air to Delhi, Varanasi and Khajuraho. Agra is also a major rail junction on the broad gauge routes connecting the Southern, Eastern and Western parts of India. Shatabdi Express (Delhi-Bhopal) and the Taj Express (Delhi-Agra-Gwalior) provide excellent connections from Delhi. Some road distances are: Delhi-204 kms, Jaipur-236 kms.

Allahabad

Allahabad is a city built at the junction of three rivers, two of which - the Ganga and the Yamuna are the lifelines of the Indian subcontinent. The third river Saraswati is now extinct but exists in mythological folklore. It has also been a learning centre with one of the oldest universities of India located here.

Ayodhya

In Hindu Mythology it is the birth place of Lord Rama, the Hindu epic God. Ayodhya is an ancient city with old temples, shrines and mosques.

Badrinath

Badrinath is one of the important pilgrimages of the Hindus, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located in the Garhwal Himalayas. The temple opens from April-May and closes for winter in the 2nd/3rd week of November.

The source of river Ganga, is a pilgrimage for Hindus because the river is venerated as the mother Goddess.

Gangotri is connected by road to Uttarkashi, Tehri Garhwal and Rishikesh and from there to other parts of the country. Kaushambi

Kaushambi is a centre of learning for the Buddhists. The archaeological excavations here have yielded a large number of sculptures and figurines, coins, punch-marked and cast coins and terra cotta sculptures which show the reverence the city was held in by the devout, in times gone by.

Auli

Auli boasts of one of the best skiing slopes in the country which drop from an altitude of 3049m to 2519m.

How to reach: The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant (270 kms). The nearest railheads are Haridwar and Dehradun. By road, Auli is only a 13 kms drive from Joshimath. State transport and Union buses ply regularly between Joshimath and Rishikesh (253 kms), Dehradun (295 kms) and Delhi (500 kms). From Joshimath onwards both bus and taxi services are available for Auli. Also the most popular way to reach Auli is by a cable car service which runs for 3 kms from Joshimath.
