BIRBAL SAHANI |
|
The
HimalayasThe Himalayas always attracted Birbal
Sahni. He undertook a number of visits and studied the Himalayan flora. He also made an
extensive study of the Rajamahal Hills of Bihar. Examining the fossil plants of the Deccan
Intertrappean he put forward the theory that the formation of that layer could not have
taken place earlier than sixty-five million years.
From the nature of microfossils in the saline series of the Punjab Salt Range, he
concluded that the age of the series could be fifty to sixty million years. His studies
added to the knowledge of the formation of the Himalayas. He made a correlated study of
some plants in Kashmir, Burma and Malaysia. On behalf of the Burma Oil Company Birbal
Sahni undertook research on the microflora of the Assam region.
